General Summary

Under general supervision, lays building materials such as brick, and firebrick; constructs or repairs walls, partitions, sewers and other structures; and performs other masonry work.
Requirements

High school graduation or GED, preferably with trade related coursework. Completion of a United States Department of Labor registered Bricklayer apprenticeship program or allied trade program.

Two years of experience in bricklaying and general masonry work.

Job Duties

Lays building materials such as bricks, structural tile, concrete or blocks of suitable materials in interior or exterior walls, partitions, foundations or corners. Sets tile in walks or floors. Finishes concrete.

Sets light stone or trims. Lays firebrick and refractory tile to repair and reline boilers. Determines vertical and horizontal alignment of courses and calculates angles. Makes repairs to brick buildings and other structures. Builds and repairs brick sewers, walls and manholes. Raises and lowers manholes, frames and grates, and reconstructs their masonry and brick work. Patches mortar cracks in manhole walls and sewers with cements. Waterproofs reservoirs and foundation walls by epoxy injection. Applies grout to tiles and other materials. Tuck points worn mortar between courses of brick.

Constructs concrete bases for plant machinery. Replaces broken crock. Breaks concrete, braces excavations and otherwise assists repair work to the water system distribution and wastewater collections systems. Performs duties in accordance with Department safety procedures including, but not limited to, the utilization of designation personal protective equipment.

Evaluation Process

1. Written Exam: 50% Maximum-32.5% Minimum

2. Evaluation of Training, Experience and Personal Qualification: 50% Maximum-32.5% Minimum

3. Total: 100% Maximum – 65% Minimum.

4. Military Service: 1% Minimum to 15% Maximum

5. Domicile Credit: 15 points

LICENSE, CERTIFICATION AND OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Employees in this class will be required to provide the tools necessary to perform the work assigned and will be required, when necessary, to operate a motor vehicle; valid State of Michigan Operator License required.
Candidates considered for placement in this classification at Wastewater Treatment Plant operations

(WWTP) and Water Treatment Plants (WTP) are required by MIOSHA standards and Departmental policy to complete a health assessment questionnaire and pass a baseline physical.

As a condition of employment at WWTP and WTP, candidates must pass a respiratory fit test and remain ready to wear a respirator during all work hours. Facial hair may interfere with the proper fit of the respirator which may make shaving of facial hair a requirement.

Employees are required to pass an annual respiratory fit test. Baseline physicals may be repeated priorto the annual respiratory fit test when deemed appropriate.

Candidates considered for placement in this classification may be subject to a Criminal Background Investigation based on the requirements of the position.

Work may be performed in an industrial environment that can involve exposure to loud noise from machinery, exposure to airborne particulates and aerosols, oxygen deficient and dangerous atmospheres, wet and slippery surfaces and indoor and outdoor environments. Work involves walking significant distances and climbing stairs and ladders. Required to participate in training as set forth by the Department
