EXTREMELY IMPORTANT – Your Action Is Needed
Upcoming Vote on H.R.5618 Scheduled in the Senate -

This was sent to me through standard e-mail, so I wanted to share it right away with the many groups I’m connected to!

FROM THE NATIONAL EMPLOYMENT LAW PROJECT:

Friends,

We have good news. Senator Robert Byrd’s successor is going to be sworn in next Tuesday afternoon, and immediately after that, the Senate will hold another vote on extending Emergency Unemployment Compensation and full federal funding of Extended Benefits through the end of November 2010. We expect we will finally have the 60 votes needed to proceed to a final vote on the bill. The House can quickly take up the Senate version, and hopefully, well before the end of next week, the President can sign the bill into law and the programs will be retroactively reinstated.

We need your help for one last push. Between now and next Tuesday, it is imperative that you keep calling and emailing both your Senators and Representatives to let them know how important it is that they vote yes on this bill. We need to hold all the votes together and get this done!

Please continue to take action by emailing your representatives and urging them to immediately pass H.R.5618, which will reinstate the federal extensions. You can also call the Congressional Switchboards, (202) 224-3121 for the Senate, and (202) 225-3121 for the House, and ask for your members’ offices.

For some additional talking points, please see our chart that shows which Senators and Congress Members voted against the extensions, as well as the impact their vote has had in your state. Please make sure to reach out to those who have voted against the extensions in the past, and let them know how their actions – and the resulting extension lapse – have impacted you. We’ll be sure to post updates on our blog with any updates that we receive.

Thanks for all your dogged determination to see this through. We hope that for those of you who will be getting benefits restored that it provides a measure of comfort, no matter how temporary.

Your friends at unemployedworkers.org

We have a brief window of opportunity to get Congress to reinstate the EUC and EB programs before it goes on a week-long recess for the 4th of July. Today, Rep. McDermott (D-WA) introduced H.R. 5618, The Restoration of Emergency Unemployment Compensation Act, which will, if passed, restore the EUC and Extended Benefits programs, retroactive to their expiration on
We are working to get a vote on this bill tomorrow, June 30th, and need your help. We are asking you to contact your Member in the House of Representatives and demand that he or she support H.R. 5618. Please call (202)224-3121 today to reach your member of Congress. If we all keep fighting, we can make this happen!
So this week it’s very important that all of you contact your own Representatives with a consistent message: abandoning the unemployed will NOT help cure the deficit problems, it will only enhance those problems. They MUST act within the next few days and vote to restore the EUC and EB programs and funding through the end of November, 2010. DO NOT GO HOME until the job is done!
Please share this message with your friends and family and please take action TODAY!
Sincerely,
The National Employment Law Project’s Unemployedworkers.org team
P.S. Don’t forget to tell all your friends to write Congress and ask for an extension of jobless benefits by clicking http://www.nelp.org/page/m/6cf700c/7158492d/33cf4187/6f6c985e/142113626/VEsE/

Good morning everyone,

I found an article on April 14th, in the Oakland press that will provide $155 Million in funds for the unemployed in the state of Michigan to help homeowners with their mortgage payment or principle reduction. These funds are going to be available in late June or July for the state of Michigan! Please click onto the links below to learn more about the programs.

The Michigan plan would offer assistance to homeowners receiving unemployment benefits. Those who qualify would get up to half of their monthly mortgage payment paid by this program up to $750 per month for up to a year. The plan also would help homeowners who have fallen behind on payments because of a temporary layoff or medical condition. Homeowners could get up to $5,000 in assistance under this portion of the program.
A third piece of the program could provide up to $10,000 from the state-plus a match from the lender- to reduce the amount of principle owed on a home! That feature is designed for a homeowner who have jobs but have lost income. Even if your spouse is working you could qualify for the third piece.

To get the ball rolling, you can call for the Lighthouse Community Counseling agency at 248-920-6200 ext 2426 for Oakland County residence and ask for a foreclosure prevention person to see if your lending is participating in this program. If you don’t live in Oakland County, please look for a foreclosure prevention person for the county that you live in.

Friends -

Last Friday, the House of Representatives finally held a vote on HR 4213…

the bill that at one point, contained an extension of the filing deadline for federal UI programs (Emergency Unemployment Compensation, Federal Additional Compensation, and the full federal funding of Extended Benefits) through the end of the year, and an extension of the COBRA subsidy also through the end of the year. Unfortunately, over the course of the last two weeks, however, that bill was stripped down on many occasions, taking out and paring down programs left and right in order to satisfy the ever-growing concerns over the budget deficit.
What’s most disturbing is that comments from a number of members of Congress made it clear that too many in Washington are wavering in their commitment to helping families survive this terrible job market. So more than just this extension is at stake – it’s the very commitment of our nation to helping the unemployed.

As a result, by the time the bill hit the House floor for a vote, the extension of the UI programs only ran though the end of November, and the COBRA subsidy was dropped altogether. And the Senate recessed on Thursday night, so they were not around to pass this bill later on Friday or over the weekend, so yet again, we are facing at least a temporary lapse of the federal UI programs and COBRA subsidy.

All of us at NELP are devastated by the recent turn of events, in particular, the growing belief that Congress can EITHER work on job creation and supporting the unemployed OR reducing the deficit. We do not believe this is an either/or choice and NELP is going to be working very hard with our allied organizations and all of you to re-shape the dialogue and help convince Members of Congress that focusing on the jobs part of the economic recovery is the BEST way to deal with our deficit problems.

Before telling you about what comes next, we want to provide a bit of information to answer questions many of you must be asking:

· If you are ALREADY receiving the COBRA subsidy, you will be able to keep receiving it, at least through the end of this year.

· If you are in the middle of a tier of EUC, you will be able to finish that tier. However, you will not be able to move on to your next available tier of EUC unless Congress extends the filing deadline again.

· If your state permanently participates in the EB program, and you are currently receiving EBs, you will also continue to receive those. The states with a permanent EB trigger are: AK, CT, KS, MN, NH, NJ, NM, NC, OR, RI, VT and WA.

· Finally, if you are in a state that permanently participates in the EB program and your EUC tier ends before Congress reauthorizes the programs, you will then start receiving EBs.

So, what’s next? Well, Congress is on recess this week, so there will be no official activity on the bill this week. But this is good – it gives all of us time to start fighting to improve the bill in the Senate. NELP will be leading the charge to get the COBRA subsidy put back into the bill before the Senate votes on it, so that those who are newly unemployed in this still-terrible job market can have a better chance of being able to maintain their personal health insurance for themselves and their families. And we know there are going to be problems with a number of Senators who are uncertain about their support for the bill for a variety of reasons (for example, some think it’s still too expensive, others are upset about things that were cut, and still others don’t like some of the tax provisions that are in unrelated parts of the bill).

So this week, it’s very important that all of you contact your own Senators with a consistent message: abandoning the unemployed will NOT help cure the deficit problems, it will only enhance those problems. The job market is still in really bad shape and they CANNOT abandon the unemployed when unemployment remains close to 10% and job creation is not yet consistent or robust You can use this link . . . . to make your voices heard.

We will likely be asking you to take action on a number of occasions over the next few weeks, and we will send you updates as frequently as we have new information to share.

Members of unemployedworkers.org are THE most motivated and responsive group of people out there – each time we send you requests to take action, over 50% of you do so, a return rate that is practically unheard of by other groups engaging in on-line advocacy. Your voices are being heard and can effect policy in ways no one else can do, so please stay motivated and please take action whenever you can.
