Low-cost clinic opens to meet need in Oakland Co.

With the number of poor people growing throughout Michigan, low-cost ‍health ‍care has expanded again — this time with a new clinic in one of the state’s wealthiest counties.

Covenant Community ‍Care, a faith-based nonprofit focused on primary medical ‍care, has teamed up with Beaumont Hospital to open a ‍health center at 27776 Woodward in Royal Oak. The goals are to provide ‍care to those who don’t have a doctor and reduce the burden on local emergency rooms.

Such clinics offer top-notch ‍care and help stabilize the ‍health of a local population, said Gary Petroni, program director of the Southeast Michigan ‍Health Association.

The clinic is designated by the U.S. Department of ‍Health and Human Services as a Federally Qualified ‍Health Center (FQHC), so federal grants will help cover costs.

There are more than a dozen similar clinics or satellite offices in Wayne County, but only a handful in Macomb and Oakland counties, according to federal data. And only one other clinic in Oakland County carries the FQHC designation — Oakland Primary ‍Health Services in Pontiac.

But according to the state, Oakland County hasn’t been immune to the down economy. Its Medicaid recipients jumped an estimated 37% — from 17,669 to 24,163 — in a 24-month period ending in September, according to state numbers.

That doesn’t surprise Paul Propson, executive director of Covenant Community ‍Care. He said Wayne County centers have seen an increasing number of Oakland and Ma-comb patients in recent years. Many had ‍health ‍care insurance for years, but lost it as the economy tanked.

“There are so many people with desperate medical situations, but manageable situations,” he said. “Because they don’t have a doctor or … medications, their ‍health erodes very quickly.”

The clinic will accept Medicaid and Medicare and provide dental ‍care, obstetric and pediatric ‍care and immunizations, Propson said.
